Autograph Letter Signed, Napoleon, one page, octavo, Chislehurst, May 5, 1872, in French. Together with the Empress’ Signature, Eugenie, penned on a blue sheet of paper measuring 4 5/8 inches wide by 2 3/8 inches high.

Napoleon III became the Emperor of France in 1852. The following January, he married the countess Eugenie de Montijo. He ruled until 1870, when he was defeated in the Franco-German War. Following the war, the Germans released him and he went to live in England where he studied technical and social problems and defended his politics in various publications
