French Impressionist painter.
Autograph Letter Signed, Degas, one page, octavo, Sunday [February 1896]. On a postal card, to Monsieur Ernest May.
“I cannot do it tomorrow nor Tuesday. It will have to be next Sunday and next Monday, Sunday in the morning and Monday in the afternoon. I need these two days in a row, otherwise it would be too difficult to get anything done. And we will have handsome Picard too. Answer me right away.”
Ernest May was a financier, friend and passionate collector of Edgar Degas’ works. He posed for At the Stock Exchange (1878-79) where he is seen under the portico of the Paris Stock Exchange.
Picard may be the painter Robert Picard (1870-1941) who was born in Brussels, the son of Edmond Picard, a prominent lawyer and active supporter of contemporary art, but who lived and worked in Paris, where he was befriended by Mallarme.
