Photograph of a group of diners at New York’s Copacabana Club, signed J D Salinger, and inscribed on the inside left cover of the photo’s presentation folder to Bob Wright: Old “Grand Dad” to you Bob. I’m full of it. J.D. Also signed by Salinger’s wife Claire Douglas, Claire’s half brother William Sholto Douglas and his wife Joan, Sholto’s personal assistant Bob Harper, [Elvey] O. Mann, “Squeek” Burnett, Vivian Henry, and Claire and David N. Laux. All the signers, except for J D Salinger, are pictured in the photograph.
Claire Douglas met Salinger in 1951 when she was only nineteen, “but all accounts of her suggest that she looked younger.” [In the photo, she is seated on the left side of the table, wearing a corsage on her dress and a clip in her hair.] They were married on February 17, 1955 and divorced in 1967. It is possible that the photograph was taken before their marriage as Claire has signed with her maiden name. Sholto Douglas “was the celebrated British air ace” [Ian Hamilton, In Search of J. D. Salinger]. During World War II, he was involved with counter-intelligence training in Devonshire.
The folder, open, measures 22 inches wide by 9 * inches high.
