Italian operatic composer.
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed, P. Mascagni, one page, oblong octavo, Rome, April 30, 1917.
Pietro Mascagni writes four measures from Act III of his opera, Lodoletta, with the lyrics, Voi Siete nel mio cuore come Dio sull’alta re! In the lower left portion, above the date, Mascagni has written, “Souvenir from the first performance.”
Lodoletta grew out of Mascagni’s rivalry with Puccini. “Although they had been friendly as fellow students at the Milan Conservatory, their careers with rival publishing houses had left them more than wary of one another. After the English writer Ouida died intestate in 1908, her literary properties were auctioned to satisfy her Tuscan creditors. Mascagni and Puccini bid against each other for the rights to Two Little Wooden Shoes. Puccini won, only to lose interest, and the rights were later sold to [his publisher] Sonzogno. Mascagni’s Lodoletta [which opened at Costanzi in Rome on April 30, 1917] was the result, but the bathos of the plot failed to arouse lasting enthusiasm at the Roman première or elsewhere” [The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians].
