Signed Photograph, “To Mrs. Hanley / S. Rachmaninoff / 1918.” An appealing head and shoulders portrait showing the composer looking over his left shoulder and resting his head on his left hand. The black and white photograph measures 7 1/4 inches wide by 8 inches high. Rachmaninoff signed in the light portion of his left hand, in the lower left portion of the photograph.
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Sergei Rachmaninoff left his native country for Stockholm, and ultimately the United States, where he arrived in New York City on November 1, 1918. He never returned to Russia where for a few years, his works were banned.
Matted in cream and blue, and framed in antiqued gilt. Framed dimensions are 13 1/2 inches wide by 14 1/2 inches high.
